Christie's sales of Victorian & British Impressionist Art comprise a rich and colorful variety of themes and styles - from Pre-Raphaelitism and Neo-Classicism to genre painting, social realism and British Impressionism, with a particular emphasis on the Newlyn School. As the recognized leader in the field for well over a decade, we have been entrusted with the sale of several important in recent years. Our sale of The Forbes Collection of Victorian Pictures & Works of Art, the finest collection of Victorian art to appear at auction in the last 60 years, totaled just under £17 million ($27 million) and set a staggering 65 new world auction records. Christie’s also staged the highly successful sale of The Christopher Wood Collection which realized £1.361 million ($2.859 million).
Combined sales in 2008 saw exceptional and record prices for the preeminent artists of the field. Highlights included a new auction world record for Albert Moore’s Jasmine securing £1.777 million ($3.481 million), and The Hon. John Collier’s Sleeping Beauty selling for record-setting £433,250 ($848,677). Other exceptional prices include £457,250 ($895,690) for Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones’s Triumph of love; £409,250 ($609,702) for Sir Frank Dicksee’s rediscovered Paolo and Francesa; £139,250 ($207,483) for William Powell Frith’s The Private View; and £181,250 ($270,063) for John William Godward’s rediscovered Mischief and repose.
