The sale of Fine American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture Including the Collection of Dr. Mark and Irene Kauffman achieved $4,246,163/ £2,670,543/ €3,192,604, the highest total ever for a mid-season sale in the category, with 81% sold by value and 71% sold by lot.
Kayla Carlsen, Head of Sale, commented: “We are thrilled with the success of today’s sale of Fine American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture which achieved the highest total ever for a mid-season sale in this category at $4.2 million. Strong prices were realized for in all areas of 20th century painting and American Modernism and eight auction records were set, including a record for Ben Shahn’s Hamilton Fish Park, which fetched $158,500, against a high estimate of $35,000. We were also pleased with the strong results achieved for examples of American sculpture including world record prices for Max Weber’s ‘Figure in Rotation’, which sold for $218,500, and Arthur Lee’s Volupté, which achieved $92,500 against a high estimate of $18,000. The liveliness and competitive bidding witnessed today in the saleroom leaves us looking forward to the next sale of American Art on May 16.”
